With teacher facilitation, the primary child learns the skills to read, think mathematically, make choices, and accept responsibility.

Students learn how to read through a balance of phonics instruction and literature of various genres. Using a small group reading program, primary children learn to read at their own pace and level of instruction. Student writers thrive at High Meadows, with its balance of task-oriented writing, (researching a question to record knowledge), creative writing, and student- directed journaling.

Math skills are taught, supported, and practiced so that they may serve as tools to reason and problem-solve. The High Meadows student uses physical models to connect concrete and abstract mathematical concepts such as logic, space, measurement, and estimation. Mathematical concepts and problems are introduced and then revisited regularly, to ensure a greater depth of understanding.

With hands-on exploration and individual and group inquiry projects, each student has the opportunity to develop an “expertise” on a number of topics. Theme class studies, such as “Light and Sound,” allow students to pose questions and discover the answers. Reading and math skills are acquired in the primary program, which allow students to research and learn individually or with peer or teacher support.
