Enola Gay navigator shares WWII experiences
Veteran talks to High Meadows students

June 28, 2007
Theodore "Dutch" Van Kirk shared his military experiences with the Middle Years students in the first "Witness to History" program at High Meadows School in Roswell.Van Kirk was navigator with the U.S. Army Air Corps who flew 58 B-17 Flying Fortress combat missions with the 97th Bomb Group over Occupied France and Germany during World War II.He was also the navigator of the Enola Gay when it dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima. His recollections and witness to his individual role in world events provided the students with a unique glimpse into the role that they play in making history. His willingness to share also offered them a perspective on World War II that stems from living as a participant rather than studying the events from a history text.
