When Billy Barron first discovered High Meadows through a job posting, he was immediately drawn to its progressive philosophy and focus on whole-child development. At the end of his first year teaching at HMS, he was awestruck when he watched each member of the High Meadows School Class of 2023 give a speech at Recognition.
As former learning specialist and freelance audiovisual professional, Mr. Barron has attended hundreds of graduations in his lifetime and never seen more than a valedictorian and salutatorian speak.
“When you hear a student talk about their journey at High Meadows School, and maybe it’s a student who has had peaks and valleys during their time on campus, it’s remarkable. We devote a lot of time and attention to our students, so it’s a special moment. I did not fully recognize how unique this was until I came to High Meadows. Hearing all the students reflect and voice their feelings about their experience at HMS is a great tradition.”
Mr. Barron came to quickly understand HMS and its mission, and remembers his first visit to campus, which happened during
High Meadows Camp in the summer of 2022. As the sun glistened on the meadows, he paused to watch the campers run and play as he prepared to teach an interactive lesson using technology as part of his interview process.
Two months later, Mr. Barron joined the staff as the technology integration specialist and assistant boys basketball coach. He experienced firsthand what makes the community special: engaged students, joyful learning, and a culture of appreciation that is felt in every interaction. Each day, he teaches students in
kindergarten through
fifth grade and uses his knowledge as a former learning specialist at a public library to guide his students.

Mr. Barron instructs the 2025-26 High Meadows Hawks.I teach the students about technology and how to use it safely; it’s a continuation of the makerspace work I did at the library. Of course, now there are new aspects like 3-D printing, YouTube, and podcasting.”
Middle Years students take six-week
mini-courses that faculty teach based on their interests and talents. Mr. Barron calls the Broadcast Media mini-course his “bread and butter.” Students curate news sources and practice sharing news through different media before creating a podcast. Mr. Barron also instructs students in a Field Recording course where they record sound effects, digital music, and campus events. This year, he hopes to launch an Electronic Media mini-course, and students might even get to experience “DJ Barron” on the tracks.
In his work, Mr. Barron loves the close-knit, family-like feel of the High Meadows School community. “It’s the subtle things that our faculty, staff, and parents do to let you know they appreciate you that make me really enjoy High Meadows,” he said. “High Meadows has taught me a lot, and it aligns with the way I want to approach young people and mentor them.”
