Let's Play Together: A Look at the Mornings on the Meadow Program

Laura McKie
Play and exploration are experiences through which children build knowledge about the world around them. Even babies are driven by an innate desire to acquire understanding through sensory exploration, whether it is reaching to touch a mobile, experimenting with newly discovered sounds, or delighting in a game of peek-a-boo. Toddlers take this process of growth and discovery to a whole new level through creative, imaginative play – especially when they can do so socially!
The High Meadows Mornings on the Meadow program was designed as an opportunity for caregivers of young children 18 months to 3 years to gather and engage in exploratory play alongside their toddler. From sensory-rich stations (paint, play dough, and water, oh my!) to ball pits and obstacle courses, each one-hour class presents a new opportunity to practice social interactions, gross-and-fine-motor skills, and imaginative play. Participants learn to transition between independent, parallel, and interactive play in a safe and engaging setting facilitated by the teacher.

The class also capitalizes on some of the most-loved locations around our campus including the barnyard, tipi, and gardens. If you’ve attended Mornings on the Meadow, you know that it’s no surprise when Maple, Mint, or Willow – our campus sheep – visit the class to see if any of the activities include some yummy bird seed to snack on! This practice of slowing down and focusing on play is not only enjoyable for parents and children alike, but it also supports healthy whole-child development and provides parents and caregivers with a chance to connect and build community.

Our hope in creating the Mornings on the Meadow program many years ago was that it would allow families with young children to experience a taste of all that High Meadows School has to offer. The class is a perfect option for families considering future Pre-K enrollment at HMS. It provides an opportunity to spend time on campus, form meaningful connections within our community, and see firsthand the benefits of hands-on, sensory-rich play. We hope you’ll come join in the fun!

We'd love to show you our beautiful, 42-acre campus and let you experience our positive, progressive approach to education. Plan your visit today or inquire by calling (770) 993-2940.
