The Meadow is Calling—Close Your Eyes and Listen

Kraig Doremus
Ava T.’s connection to High Meadows began almost as soon as her life did. At a mere two weeks old, she was already on the school’s sprawling, stunning campus as she accompanied her brothers to school. She quickly became part of a community that had a big impact on her upbringing and view of society.
High Meadows was more than a school for Ava, it was a place of belonging and a steady, familiar presence woven into the fabric of her early life. The campus, with its natural beauty and welcoming spirit, became a second home where she was known, supported, and encouraged to be herself.

“Ava was there every single day,” her mother, Suzanne, said. “High Meadows was a huge part of our life. It was our community. We made lifelong friends, and we knew everyone.”

When she enrolled at High Meadows and joined her siblings, Ava embraced an instruction style that was hands-on, exploratory, rooted in curiosity, and, of course, connected to the natural environment. She spent her days discovering the world around her, surrounded by 42 acres of historic farm property. Given the freedom to ask questions and follow her interests, Ava was not afraid to take risks or offer an imperfect answer. Instead, she developed confidence and a willingness to try, reflect, and grow. High Meadows School and its nurturing, caring environment helped her build not only strong academic habits but also a deep sense of self-assurance and independence.

One of the most defining aspects of Ava’s High Meadows experience emerged during Middle Years, when she discovered a passion for Spanish. Under the guidance of Ms. Spinola, Ava developed proficiency in the language. That experience became a turning point, ultimately influencing her decision to enroll in Sprayberry High School’s dual-language immersion program. The program offers a distinctive opportunity for students to earn a high school diploma in Spain, and Ava was drawn to both its academic rigor and global perspective.

“Ava loved Spanish in Middle Years,” recalled her mother. “Ms. Spinola is a strong reason why she went to Sprayberry. We asked her for a recommendation before her ninth-grade year, and she wrote a beautiful letter encouraging them to invite Ava to the program. The head of the program said it was one of the most amazing letters she’d read. You only get that if someone really knows and cares about your kid.”

Ava graduated from Sprayberry in 2025 and continues to carry with her the lessons and values she developed at High Meadows. She approaches new experiences with curiosity and confidence, unafraid to step outside her comfort zone. Following high school, she took a gap year to travel and explore the world.

As Ava takes the next steps in her life, her mom gives a heartfelt message to prospective High Meadows families. “Stand on the Meadow, close your eyes, and listen,” she encourages. “Let what you hear influence your decision.  You’ll hear children playing, animals crowing, and the joyful voices of the adults. That’s a great indicator that you’re in the right place.” Schedule a tour today to see (and listen for) Suzanne’s beautiful description of High Meadows School. The Meadow is calling!
