High Meadows School Appoints Gary Brown to Lead Middle Years & Connections Program

Kraig Doremus
ROSWELL, Ga. – Following an extensive search, High Meadows School has appointed Gary Brown as Middle Years & Connections Principal. He becomes the fourth person to hold the role in the school’s 52-year history.
“Middle schoolers are at one of the most dynamic and interesting stages of human development – curious, funny, occasionally chaotic, and deeply capable of growth when the adults around them get it right,” Brown said. “I have spent 15 years in middle school classrooms because I genuinely love this age group, and the opportunity to serve them in a broader way – to shape the culture and program they experience every day – feels like a natural and exciting next step.”

Brown joins High Meadows from The Westminster Schools in Atlanta, where he has served since 2023 and previously from 2016-21. He is currently the co-director of Westminster’s  MayATL Experiential Learning Program, a role he began in 2024. Brown oversees program design, faculty collaboration, and all communications and logistics.

The veteran educator draws parallels between the MayATL Program and High Meadows’ Connections Program, which includes barnyard, environmental sustainability, music, PE, Spanish, technology, theatre arts, and visual arts. “The Connections Program resonates with me,” he said. “When students are given the opportunity to explore, create, move, and connect across disciplines and grade levels, something remarkable happens. Connections classes do that not as a once-a-year event but as a defining feature of the school's identity every single day. That's exciting to me.”

Brown also teaches middle school mathematics at Westminster. He was recognized with the O. Wayne Rollins Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching and has led AI-focused professional development workshops across all three school divisions. Outside the classroom, Brown has coached middle school robotics and junior varsity girls’ soccer. From 2019–21, he served as Dean of Sixth Grade Boys.

In addition to his experience at an Atlanta-area independent school, Brown taught mathematics internationally at The American Overseas School of Rome from 2021–23 and at the International Community School in Singapore from 2014–16.

Brown earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Kennesaw State University in 1993 and a Master of Education in Secondary Mathematics from the University of Georgia in 1996. He began his career in education in 1996 at Marietta High School as a mathematics teacher and department chair.

He and his wife, Rachel, have three daughters: Frances, Charlotte, and Margaret.

Head of School Lisa Baker noted: “Gary stood out not only for his experience and leadership, but for his clear alignment with who we are as a school and where we are headed. He brings a thoughtful blend of experiential learning leadership, curriculum development, and faculty coaching, along with extensive experience working with middle school students across a variety of educational settings. His commitment to student support, collaboration with families and faculty, and his ability to lead innovative, student-centered programming align deeply with the mission and values of High Meadows. We are confident that Gary will be a wonderful addition to our community and a strong leader for our Middle Years Program.”

Brown will officially begin his tenure in mid-June. “What became clear during my time on campus is that the teachers at High Meadows are extraordinary – not just in their experience and expertise, but in the genuine care they have for their students. You can feel it in the way they talk about the kids, the way they talk about each other, and the way they show up every day. I feel incredibly fortunate to be stepping into a community of educators with that much heart.”
